The 8th edition of the Hereditary Cardiac Diseases Course took place between March 22-23 of 2024, in Bucharest – Romania, and presented the following figures:

Laura Antohi (Romania)
Dr. Laura Antohi is a Clinical Cardiologist in the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases “C.C.Iliescu” in Bucharest, Romania, working on the intensive cardiac care unit, ever since finishing her residency. She is currently a PhD student, with the main area of research being the evaluation of hemodynamics in heart failure patients. Also, she is alumni of the 3rd Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure organized by the University of Zurich and the Heart Failure Association of European Society of Cardiology and has received a Master’s Degree on "Global Research Training Program in Drug Development for Heart Failure” from the University of Brescia, having prof. M. Gheorghiade as course director.

Professor Arbustini is graduated in Medicine and specialized in Cardiology, Pathologic Anatomy and Genetics. She is Director of the Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases and of the Transplant Research Area of the IRCCS Foundation, University Hospital, Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia, Italy. Her research activity includes: clinical and molecular genetics of cardiovascular diseases (heritable cardiomyopathies and aneurysmal connective tissue) and non-cardiovascular syndromic and non-syndromic disorders (inherited lung diseases, familial cancer); pharmacogenetics; gene expression; pathology of cardiovascular diseases and
transplanted thoracic organs.

Adela Chirita-Emandi is a consultant in Pediatrics and in Medical Genetics, Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes Timisoara. The experience in research includes more than 30 scientific papers published in national and international journals (including in journals Nature and The Lancet), editor or co-author of 7 books and more than 80 presentations and posters at national and international conferences. She is a Vice president of the Romanian Society of Medical Genetics, and member in the European Society of Medical Genetics ESHG. She is a geneticist in the Regional Center of Medical Genetics Timis within Emergency Hospital for Childre “Louis Țurcanu” Timişoara, a reference center witih European Reference Network on Rare Congenital Malformations and Rare Intellectual Disability ITHACA. She is part of the Genomic Medicine Center team, coordinated by Prof Dr Puiu, in the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes Timisoara. The main clinical interests are genetics and rare diseases.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eliza Cinteza is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest (2000). She followed the internship program, residency (Pediatrics), the second residency (Cardiology), following in parallel the university stages that allowed to reach the current position of Associate Professor in Pediatrics at the Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children "MS Curie" being named Pediatric Resident Coordinator since 2015, later Pediatric Cardiology Resident Coordinator.
Training in Pediatrics, Cardiology, Echocardiography, Interventional Cardiology, Congenital Heart Disease was perfected during scholarships and study visits at Policlinico San Donato (Milan, Italy, 2007, 2013, 2014), Evelina Children's Hospital (London, UK, 2010 ), Bad Oyenhausen, Germany (2012), Bambino Gesu Hospital (Rome, Italy), “Orsola Malpighi” Hospital (Bologna, Italy, Pulmonary Hypertension, 2015), Memorial Children’s Hospital (Warsaw, Poland, 2017), Lund University Hospital ( Lund, Sweden, 2019).
Areas of interest: hypertension in children and cardiovascular risk factors (Doctor of Medicine 2009), Interventional Cardiology (initiator and promoter of the National Program of Interventional Cardiology for Congenital Cardiac Diseases in Children, nationally certified in Interventional Cardiology, so far over 150 interventions as first operator), pulmonary hypertension (research grant of UMF "Carol Davila"), congenital heart disease (European Certificate of Echocardiography in Congenital Heart Diseases), transesophageal ultrasound (National Certificate), Vascular Ultrasound (National Certificate), general ultrasonography (National Certificate).

Professor Damy’s main field of interests are heart failure and amyloidosis, extending from its epidemiology and physiopathology through to its diagnosis and treatment. His particular current interests include early cardiac diagnostic markers, from biology to imaging. He is a co-author of more than 2000 articles (half of them focusing on amyloidosis).
Thibaud Damy qualified in medicine at the University of Paris XI, Paris, France, in 1996. After a period of postgraduate cardiology training in several Parisian hospitals, he specialised in heart failure and cardiomyopathy and obtained his PhD on the effect of nitric oxide on heart failure at the University of Paris VII. Professor Damy subsequently took up a position as Senior Lecturer in Cardiology and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Henri Mondor Hospital, Créteil, France, and later as Senior Research Fellow at the Academic Cardiology Department of Professor John G Cleland at the University of Hull, Hull, UK. In 2011, he was appointed Professor in Cardiology and became the Head of the Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy unit at Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.
In 2009, Professor Damy created the “Mondor Amyloidosis Network”, which involves all the clinical facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of amyloidosis, in addition to a clinical research team. It rapidly became an important multidisciplinary network involving more than 40 healthcare professionals in the hospital. In 2014, they created the GRC Amyloid Research Institute. Since 2010, more than 5.900 patients have been referred to the centre for suspicion of cardiac amyloidosis and more than 2100 had a diagnosis confirmed. Professor Damy and his team created a wide educational programme to improve the knowledge and quality of life of the patients: Amylo Patient Education Program (Amylo-PEP). In 2017, the Mondor Amyloidosis Network was appointed as referral centre for cardiac amyloidosis by the French Health Ministry.

Pablo Garcia Pavia (Spain)
Dr. García-Pavia is a Consultant cardiologist at the Department of Cardiology of Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain. There he is in charge of the Inherited Cardiac Diseases and Heart Failure Unit. The Unit is designed as national reference unit (CSUR) for inherited cardiovascular diseases by the Spanish Ministry of Health and also acts as a European reference center for rare cardiovascular diseases after its designation by the European Comission.
His areas of research include heart failure, amyloidosis and cardiomyopathies. After finishing his training in Cardiology in Madrid, Dr Garcia-Pavia completed a clinical research fellowship at the Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases Unit at The Heart Hospital (University College of London) in London, UK. Previously he had undertaken short stays as research fellow in basic research labs focused in genetics at the University of Chicago, Complutense University and Autonoma University.
Dr Garcia-Pavia is the leader of the 2021 ESC position paper on diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis and serves in the steering committee of several ongoing clinical trials in TTR cardiac amyloidosis and genetic cardiomyopathies. He is also former member of ESC Council on Basic Research, former member of the Nucleus of ESC working group on myocardial and pericardial diseases, and former president of Spanish Society of Cardiology’s working group on inherited cardiac diseases. He has published >160 articles in peer-reviewed journals including European Heart Journal, J Am Coll Cardiol, Circulation, Nature Communications, Nature Medicine and The Lancet.

Adrian Giucă (Romania)
Dr. Adrian Giuca is a cardiology fellow in Romania’s largest cardiovascular center: “Prof. Dr. C.C. Iliescu” Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases, Bucharest.
His fields of interest are represented by multimodality imaging applied in the area of valvular heart disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathies, but also by interventional cardiology.
Currently he is being trained at the “Hart Long Centrum” of Leiden University Medical Center in The Netherlands, being prepared in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in specific clinical scenarios, particularly in the management and guidance of structural heart interventions done in the catheterization laboratory (MitraClip, TriClip, Cardioband, TAVR).

Juan Pablo Kaski (UK)
Dr. Kaski is Associate Professor of Paediatric Inherited Cardiology at the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), London, UK. He is the Director of the GOSH Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases, the largest centre in Europe dedicated to the investigation and management of inherited cardiac conditions in childhood. Dr Kaski’s clinical and research interests are focused on the clinical and genetic characterisation of inherited cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death in childhood and he won the Young Investigator Award for Clinical Science from the European Society of Cardiology in 2008 for his work on the genetic basis of pre-adolescent hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He is the current Chair of the Association for European Paediatric Cardiology (AEPC) Working Group on Genetics, Basic Science and Myocardial Disease and sits on the Executive Board of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Cardiomyopathy and Myocarditis Registry Programme and the ESC Council on Cardiovascular Genomics. He leads an international paediatric HCM consortium of over 45 centres, which was responsible for the development of the first sudden death risk prediction model for childhood HCM.

Iacopo Olivotto (Italy)
Prof. Iacopo Olivotto is Head of the Cardiomyopathy Unit and Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Careggi University Hospital in Florence, Italy. Over the last two decades, his main clinical and research interests have includes various aspects of cardiomyopathies, with special focus on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), ranging from clinical predictors of disease progression and outcome, arrhythmias, medical and surgical management, advanced imaging and genetic studies, developmental, translational studies addressing cardiac myofilament contractility and cellular electrophysiology. These lines of research have been instrumental in creating a growing multidisciplinary network connecting the Florence team to distinguished Institutions worldwide. Prof. Olivotto has been involved in the design and execution of randomized studies in genetic cardiomyopathies, and has been the lead of the recently presented Explorer HCM trial. Prof. Olivotto has co-authored over 200 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals. He is a co-founder and board member of The Sarcomeric Human Cardiomyopathy Registry (Share) and ICON (International CardiomyOpathy Network).
Sebastian Onciul (Romania)
Dr. Sebastian Onciul is a Cardiologist, being level 3 fully certified in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance by European Society of Cardiology. He is a Lecturer in Cardiology at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, being specialized in non-invasive imaging of cardiovascular diseases. He was trained in the UK in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and has experience in multimodality imaging of genetic cardiomyopathies. He is co-editor of the ESC/EACVI Pocket Guideline of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
Antonis Pantazis
Dr Antonis Pantazis is a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead for the Cardiomyopathy and the Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions Service at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London. The service covers all areas of the Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions, from foetus to adult, from the genetic diagnosis to deep phenotyping and from medical treatment to advanced interventions including a state-of-the-art interventional programme for the management of Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. His clinical research is focused on the clinical phenotype of cardiomyopathies, such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy, Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy, their genetic causes and the use of cardiac imaging for the clinical evaluation of the diseases. He also has a special interest in heart conditions in athletes, who may present with cardiomyopathy. Dr Pantazis is the Chairman of the nucleus of the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases.

Bogdan A. Popescu is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest, Romania. He is Head of cardiology department and director of the echocardiography laboratory at the Institute of Cardiovascular Disease "Prof. C. C. Iliescu" in Bucharest.
He published more than 180 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and more than 25 book chapters and books in cardiology and cardiac imaging. His main fields of research interest are on myocardial function/heart failure, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease.
He is Immediate Past-President of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging and President Elect of the Romanian Society of Cardiology.
Viorica Rădoi (Romania)
Primary care physician in the Medical Genetics Department with over 20 years of experience in the field, employed at the National Institute for Maternal and Child Health "Alessandrescu-Rusescu", member of the Romanian Society of Medical Genetics, with skills partaining to the interpretation of the most recent genetic tests available on the Romanian and international market, offers genetic consultations and counseling, including in the Personal Genetics private healthcare medical center. She is also involved in molding young minds at UMF "Carol Davila" in the position of „Head of Works”, within the Department of Medical Genetics. Eager for research in the field of medical genetics and motivated by increasing the quality of medical practice in this specialty. Roxana Rimbaş (Romania)
I am currently Coordinator of Echocardiography Lab from Research Unit of Cardioloy Department, under the Academy of Medical Science, from the University Emergency Hospital. This lab provide support for two educational courses, in which I am involved as a lector: vascular ultrasound evaluation and transesophageal, and new echocardiographic techniques (3D echo, speckle tracking, and DTI). I am also coordinator of the amyloidosis team from our department, with 2 active multicenter grants in the field of amyloidosis, member of the peer-review board of 6 ISI journals, and expert research evaluator for CNCSIS and European Comision (remote/onsite) ( Bucharest/Brussels).
